Jake Bugg's 'Shangri La'

Monday 24 March 2014

'Shangri La' is Jake Bugg's second album and was named after the recording studio in Malibu California. He recorded Rick Rubin, one of the most famous producers who has recorded with many artists from Johnny Cash to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

'Shangri La' is quite different to his first album which was more about his life in Clifton, Nottingham with more violence based subjects including stabbings in car parks and drug use. His last album was also more acoustic unlike 'Shangri La', which has more rock songs.' Shangri La' has a lot to do with how people look at society and how they hide what they think and fake emotion. "There's a beast and we all feed it" is a great example of how people don't particularly want things to happen but can't help encouraging bad things and give them something to 'feed on'.

I recently went to see Jake Bugg live, he really gets the message across through singing and I think to listen to someone's album is one thing but to then go see him or her live and feel the connection between the artist and audience is an amazing experience. Jake Bugg's performance was brilliant however I would say that he can be very shy when speaking and didn't communicate with the audience much apart from a 'thank you' now and then. At every gig the crowd always gives him so much they sing practically every word of his songs back to him but he just doesn't give as much back.
