Catching Fire Movie

Part 2 of 3 in the jaw-dropping and extremely gripping Hunger Games trilogy is set in the ruins of North America in a nation called Panem. It’s directed by Francis Lawrence, and features actors such as Jennifer Lawrence, as the powerful lead character Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as Katniss’ boyfriend Peeta Mellark, Woody Harrelson as the drunk mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, and Lenny Kravitz as the kind stylist, Cinna.

The film begins in the woods at the borders of District 12, where Katniss and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) are on an illegal hunting trip. When Katniss gets back home, she’s welcomed by a visitor – President Snow (Donald Sutherland), who tells her about uprisings in other districts. While on a Victory Tour, when Katniss pays tribute to the fallen kids from other districts, instead of containing the spark, and preventing the uprisings that will ultimately lead to war, she unconsciously adds fuel to that fire. However, it’s the least of her concerns as for a Quarter Quell, Hunger Games that take place every 25 years, a tribute will be chosen from the existing pool of winners from each district. As the only alive female tribute in District 12, Katniss has no other choice but to take part in yet another games of killing.

The use of camera angles, costume design and music, is supposed to give a closer look on to the characters and their feelings. At points such as when someone’s heart stops beating, a clever close up is used to show the fear and desperation in another person’s face as they see their loved ones die.

Catching Fire didn’t miss out as many crucial points of the plot, as The Hunger Games did. I enjoyed the screenplay and script in the film because it adds to the idea of the main character being kept in the dark over things that are a serious concern to her. Very well thought out.
