Remembrance Evening 2013

Monday 2 December 2013

As you all know 2014 is the centenary of the beginning of World War I. It being such a big occasion, the school has decided to kick off the celebrations early by having an inter-disciplinary learning week. Many classes incorporated themes of World War I.
For example, the P.E department joined in by creating a World War I assault course. The English department looked at persuasive techniques in recruitment posters, and first years created drama sketches and their own poems. The Maths department examined code breaking, and the History department explored life in the trenches. Ms Summerling and her Advanced Higher Music class worked on a song, and Peter Webster shared a thought-provoking prayer in memory of the soldiers. Local historian Archie Foley also gave a talk on the subject. The Art department created World War I pictures inspired by the work of Paul Nash. BBC Radio Scotland interviewed Ms Thow and Ms Sinclair for the event, and plan to follow Portobello High School in the build-up to next year’s centenary. The inter-disciplinary projects culminated in Ms Thow’s Remembrance evening celebration hosted in the library. This provided a show case for all the activities across the school. Ms Thow’s research brought to life the records of the former pupils from Portobello High School who tragically lost their lives fighting for their country in World War I.
